Raised Panel Cabinet Doors

What are raised panel cabinet doors? Raised panel cabinet doors are defined as typically being built in 5 pieces. 4 pieces of wood for the frame of the cabinet door, and the 5th piece being the raised panel itself. Raised panel cabinet doors have been around for centuries. Long before the strength of modern woodworking glues and adhesives, doors and cabinet doors were assembled with no glue at all, usually the joints were doweled to hold them together. As we can see from our wonderful historic homes and building this method of cabinet door construction has been tested over time and has proved to be one of the best ways to construct cabinet doors.

The raised panel cabinet door has a center panel that is “raised”. All that means is that the edges of the wood of the panel are cut or raised to fit into the grooves of the cabinet door frame. Historically this “raising” of the cabinet door panel was done by hand usually with a hand plane, sometimes very crudely just to get the panels edges to fit into the grooves of the cabinet door frame. Some early craftsmen placed the back side (flat side) of the raised panel door, out to the showing face of the cabinet or furniture they made, leaving the planed raised panel edge on the inside of the cabinet where no one would see it, exposing only the flat side to the room. As hand planes became more complex actual planes were developed to cut a more consistent raised panel edge where the raised panel could be displayed more proudly, showing off a crisper raised panel detail. Since the advent of large powerful rotary shaping equipment shaping of the raised panel door has become more simplified over the hand plane of yesteryear. Modern shaping equipment is much faster and produces consistent results.

The combinations of raised panel cabinet doors are virtually endless. Doors can be produced as a standard raised panel door, as well as with an arch or cathedral arch top. Raised panel cabinet doors can be made in just about any wood, as well as composite materials such as MDF. Raised panels can be made into wainscoting or cabinet end panels, to give your cabinets a classier appearance. There are additional combinations such as multi-panel cabinet doors, as well as single and multi-panel applied moulding raised panel cabinet doors.

Drawer fronts can also be produced in a raised panel design. One thing to keep in mind that raised panel drawer fronts will have to be tall or high (vertical dimension) enough to allow a full panel without losing the center flat portion of the raised panel. Typically this minimum height is 6" to allow for a aesthetically pleasing front as well as providing a large enough flat area in the center of the panel to place a handle or knob.

Maple Raised Panel Cabinet Door And Maple Dovetail Drawer Box Refacing Project

Janice K From Minneapolis Minnesota writes:

We recently completed a large whole house cabinet refacing project using all new custom cabinet raised panel doors and custom built dovetail drawer boxes. Our project entailed the complete refacing of all of the cabinets in our home. Our kitchen cabinet layout was comprised of a large U shaped kitchen along with a large panty cabinet, and a custom kitchen island. The remainder of the house consisted of 3 bathroom vanity cabinets and 3 linen closets in each of the bathrooms. There were also two hallway built in cabinets, that were to receive new custom cabinet doors and we  wanted to add pull out drawers or sometimes called roll out drawers to utilize space which was previously been hard to access with the current cabinet shelving.

Our kitchen had maple cabinets but with a very basic kitchen cabinet door style, some have called it a back panel door. This is a frame of wood and a piece of thin wood is glued to the back of the frame. Basically this was a builder grade or contractor grade kitchen cabinet door at the time of the home construction. The cabinet boxes were constructed relatively well as well as we never abused them. So we figured this project would be the ideal candidate for a cabinet door and drawer replacement. Since the existing cabinetry in the home was made from hard rock maple we decided to go with new custom cabinet doors made from the same maple wood. We liked the solidity of the raised panel cabinet door style, and we thought it would make our cabinets look like we spent a lot of money on custom cabinets, when we simply replaced the kitchen cabinet doors with new ones. The current maple kitchen cabinets and cabinet doors had a simple clear finish so it was easy to get the doors to match perfectly just by simply using a clear polyurethane finish.

Along with new custom built cabinet doors we also decided to upgrade and replace the existing kitchen cabinet drawer boxes, as well as the bathroom vanity drawer boxes. The drawers boxes we selected were solid maple dovetail drawers with full extension ball bearing drawer guides. These were superior to the basic white roller kitchen cabinet drawer guides that were, once again, contractor grade at the time of the home construction. Some of the current drawers had a rough grinding sound when you pulled them out so the new full extension ball bearing drawer guides would give us smooth operation for a long time. Since these builder grade kitchen cabinets only had shelves in the bottom cabinets we decided to remove the kitchen cabinet shelves and install new pull out drawers sometimes referred to as roll out drawers. I saw these in a friends kitchen cabinet and I had to have these. In fact I ordered these for all of the base cabinets and did away with the current cabinet shelving and installed pull out drawers instead. From what I hear from some of the remodeling contractors in the Minneapolis Minnesota area is that most people that are remodeling and installing new kitchen cabinets are requesting that pull out drawers be installed in the base cabinets, and in pantry cabinets as well. The real good news is that if your existing cabinets do not have them they can be easily installed in almost any cabinet or pantry cabinet.

One thing we really liked was the pull our drawers in out linen closets. I think we managed to put twice as many things in them than the previous cabinet shelving. The pull outs in the kitchen cabinet pantry cabinets gave us access to all of the items and made finding things much easier, which saved time when preparing a meal in the kitchen by avoiding time searching for things. The dovetail joints on the custom cabinet drawer boxes are very beautiful and are a mark of true craftsmanship. The drawer boxes are made from solid hard rock maple and with the dovetail joints will definitely last forever.

The new custom cabinet doors we used for the kitchen and bathroom refacing project were also solid maple, a beautiful raised panel door design. We liked the look of the ogee raised panel detail, it gave the cabinet doors a fancier look and since there were no additional charges for that raised panel detail we decided on that. The original back panel doors that came with our house had a finger pull edge and that was not something we wanted with this cabinet refacing project. We liked the look of square outside edges and a handle on the cabinet doors. We used knobs on the new custom cabinet drawer fronts that matched the new raised panel cabinet doors. We feel using knobs and handles gives the cabinets a richer appearance and that was the look we were trying to achieve.

We offer a wide selection of high quality custom Raised Panel Cabinet Doors. Everything from a single panel Raised Panel Door to single and double arched, as well as multi-panel doors. All of our Raised Panel Doors can be made from economical paint grade materials, such as Poplar and MDF.
